What’s little, but is big? It is leaders! Those itty bitty bits of fabric you’d probably toss into
the trash will make a big difference in your quilt making! When sewing, using a “leader” is the first
step in making the perfect seam! At least, with a leader, you’ll have a head
start making it perfect. Certainly, sewing straight is the major seam “perfect-maker”! Anyway, without a leader, when you immediately
start sewing pieces together, you’ll end up with a not-so-nice cobweb of thread
on the back side.
Extra thread = extra bulk
Without a leader, the only other way to prevent this cobweb
look is that you must hold both top thread & bobbin thread at the same time as
you start sewing. I’d rather leave the job to my leader and hold my fabric
pieces in place.
You don’t need much fabric to make a leader...
The only time you
don’t need a leader is when you are continually sewing piece after piece.
SO,
before you cut those threads, stuff the leader (used now as an ender), stitch a bit, then
cut your threads! You will also save yards and yards and yards of thread over the course of
creating a quilt!
