It's Time

Months before the dinos arrived, I read everything I could about raising chickens. I continue to read and learn. The latest book I have on the subject is Lisa Steele’s fabulous new book: 101 Chicken Keeping Hacks. It’s been a fabulous read!

Anyway, I am doing the same process for gardening. This winter, before getting my fingernails really dirty, I’m learning all I can about the different recommended garden practices. By reading the various library ebooks, I’m learning the language. I’m learning what questions to ask. I’m learning more about...

Permaculture Gardening
Square Foot Gardening
Biointensive Gardening
Sustainable Gardening
Ecosystems

Never before have I paid attention.

It’s time.

Pretend

One is never too old to learn something new! I am most certain research will back up my claim: It is a great way to stay mentally active!

When I say “new” I refer to acquiring knowledge totally outside my comfort zone. It’s not to polish up my skills, or learn a new technique or way of doing something I already know something about, but a totally new (yet I’ve always wanted to know about) aspect.

I will never actually seek a Masters Degree. It is most impractical for a 65+ me with zero plans on ever working full time again (especially to pay off the over $75,000 ridiculous cost to achieve such a degree). But I have spent the past few days of down time (while husband recuperates from double bypass surgery) coming up with a pretend degree plan through Texas A&M University!

Thank goodness for the Internet and folks/businesses that provide content!

I am very interested in land management (our own personal land and surrounding local community) by transferring the precious commodity into a permaculture landscape.

I started in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences area, then found the “Master of Agriculture in Agricultural Development” (ALEC) degree planner that lists the required courses.

For the “additional” ALEC courses and the “Support Courses” I found TAMU’s online catalog and simply scrolled down the list of course descriptions.

Everything and anything that peeked my interest, I right clicked “open link in new tab” and will read further, later. I have bunches of links open and pray my system doesn’t crash on me!

Oh. My. Goodness. For the first required course “Principles of Adult Education” I found a bucket load of online resources and read and read and read...

Anyway, while trying to keep a low profile around here, that’s what I’ve been doing... learning something new!

What are you learning today?

Wearing a Hearing Aid Does Not Mean…

After living 50+ years with hearing issues, and the “good” ear declining rapidly the last five years, our health insurance finally paid off and I was able to get a hearing aid. I’ve had it now since June 2015. However, let me explain, wearing a hearing aid does not mean I hear 100%. Given the left ear is basically dead in the water, the hearing aid only services 50% of my hearing in the first place! THEN, when my back is to you, and your back is to me, and you start talking, PLEASE excuse me if I ask you to repeat!

Even if we’re both facing one another,

When I ask, “What did you say?”

Please, do not ask, “Do you have your ear in?”

Wearing a hearing aid does not mean one can hear perfectly.

For me, it has been a life changing event.

I’m still working on learning how to hear.

Sometimes it makes me so nervous because I want to hear perfectly… especially when I’m in a room with poor acoustics like a few weeks ago…

I gave a presentation ~ History of Quilting ~ before a group of ladies. It was in a large high ceiling carpeted room. Once my part of the presentation was over, it was a show and tell time. The ladies would tell the story about the quilt they brought, as Jeanie and I held it up for all to see. I was standing on the stage, Jeanie on the floor level. I would hear someone talking, but I, for the longest time, couldn’t tell where it was coming from, who was sharing their story!

It’s me, too, learning what wearing a hearing does not mean…

I’m trying…
