Pretend

One is never too old to learn something new! I am most certain research will back up my claim: It is a great way to stay mentally active!

When I say “new” I refer to acquiring knowledge totally outside my comfort zone. It’s not to polish up my skills, or learn a new technique or way of doing something I already know something about, but a totally new (yet I’ve always wanted to know about) aspect.

I will never actually seek a Masters Degree. It is most impractical for a 65+ me with zero plans on ever working full time again (especially to pay off the over $75,000 ridiculous cost to achieve such a degree). But I have spent the past few days of down time (while husband recuperates from double bypass surgery) coming up with a pretend degree plan through Texas A&M University!

Thank goodness for the Internet and folks/businesses that provide content!

I am very interested in land management (our own personal land and surrounding local community) by transferring the precious commodity into a permaculture landscape.

I started in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences area, then found the “Master of Agriculture in Agricultural Development” (ALEC) degree planner that lists the required courses.

For the “additional” ALEC courses and the “Support Courses” I found TAMU’s online catalog and simply scrolled down the list of course descriptions.

Everything and anything that peeked my interest, I right clicked “open link in new tab” and will read further, later. I have bunches of links open and pray my system doesn’t crash on me!

Oh. My. Goodness. For the first required course “Principles of Adult Education” I found a bucket load of online resources and read and read and read...

Anyway, while trying to keep a low profile around here, that’s what I’ve been doing... learning something new!

What are you learning today?

  1. What an amazing venture, even if only as a dream. I'm sure you will learn so much more than you ever imagined and will be able to use the information without actually enrolling in classes and getting a Master's Degree. You are making a difference to YOU and to others. Thanks. I've been thinking about things out of my box of knowledge and comfort zone, but haven't narrowed it down, YET!

    1. First let me apologize for not replying until now... for some reason, I am not getting notifications!

It's been a fun informative adventure thanks to the Internet! Yes! I am gaining knowledge I never thought of having! You'll find something... what about marketing techniques! That would help in your other interests.

      Thank you!

  2. I've repeatedly been where you are with a husband recovering from surgery! Your dabbling in everything strikes a chord with me as well: I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up!!! In college I enjoyed everything & afterwards, tried many many things; I'm the George Plimpton of the female work world!
Last but not least: Pretend? You may be able to audit courses free and online from various learning institutions. My alma mater, Syracuse University, had free auditing for seniors many years ago so I'm sure others do it as well. (Something else for your online researching!) You and your husband might enjoy dabbling in ham radio someday...That's what we have done since we can't motorcycle anymore due to Steve's back surgery. Well, best of luck to you both...and I'll explore your archives more another day!!! ---Anita (It's funny, I created a "Comment as" persona and URL but it won't remember me from one comment to the next...Then I see "Sign out" but I never signed in! Oh, well!)

    1. For some reason I'm not receiving notifications from blogspot that someone has left a comment! I am just now reading your comment!

Thank you! Oh, I am thoroughly enjoying learning on my own - the "pretend" is just an outline of sorts, an organized go by! It's up my alley with turning the yard into a permaculture designed landscape!
