23 Awesome DIY Rainwater Harvesting Systems You Can Build at Home

Right now I have a wheelbarrow sitting out in the front and back yards. Last week’s rain filled them both up nicely! I know using wheelbarrows are not an efficient method, not to mention ruining the metal wheelbarrows, causing them to rust. Oh, and something I wouldn’t dare do during the summer when it’s mosquito season. I’m sure the mosquitoes could breed now, but I haven’t noticed any buzzing around.

Anyway! I want to harvest the precious rainwater. It’s another aspect I need to incorporate within the garden plan/design. I would like several, mini catchments if you will, with a faucet on each to either attach a hose, or simply fill up a watering can, saving steps to where I need to water, saving from dragging a garden hose from the front of the house to wherever.

I’m so exited to be joining the San Saba Garden Club tomorrow! From what I’ve learned from friends already members, they have amazing programs!

This first meeting - January - just happens to be on harvesting rainwater!!! Perfect timing!

Momma is joining the club as well! I’m picking her up tomorrow and we’re heading to San Saba! We both are extremely ready to get going!

I’m reading what I can today, jotting down any questions I might want to ask tomorrow!

Oh, and getting my mini notebook ready to take notes!

Blessed Rain

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a good soaking rain around here. The stock tank was beginning to look pitiful. Praise the Lord! We are getting the blessed rain needed! Isn’t this a pretty picture?!?

I went to Dallas on Sunday with the primary purpose of taking down and packing up my parents’ Christmas decorations. My St. Louis niece, Dr. Leslie, whom I hadn’t seen in over a year, would also be in Dallas on a visit during this time. Between the two of us, we got them all done ~ and stored away until next year ~ by noon on Monday! Yes!

She went back to Missouri and I returned to the ranch yesterday afternoon. I had had it planned not to return home until this morning. It all changed once I saw the massive storm predictions. I drove through pouring down rain taking her to the airport and the drive back to the Dallas house. Sheets of rain. But then it slacked up as I loaded the vehicle! Another, Praise the Lord!

The rain was not bad on the way back home. Off and on it was heavy, but nothing like I experienced driving to the airport in Dallas! Then, the closer I got to the ranch, the less need for the windshield wipers!

As I came to the low water crossing, then began to climb the hill on the "house side", I prayed out loud:

Thank you, Dear God for getting me home safely.

Please, now let the bottom drop out! Amen!

It warms my heart when God answers prayers the way I'd hoped!

First Day of Spring - 2012

This day started with the continuation of last night’s heavy rain. We’ve seen marvelous lightning shows overnight and into this morning in every direction. Our poor Beth and Anna trembles with every round of eerie rumbling thunder. For us, the storm failed to produce the predicted hail or the tiniest tornado! We are blessed. I hope family and friends are safe and well, too.

Within my ArtFire online shop, when describing a product I always include the statement: "Created in a smoke-free, pet friendly environment". Here is a simple reminder of our girls, picture taken a week ago on a sunshine filled day:

According to the radar, we have maybe thirty more minutes before the rain stops. Then the run off will cause even more flooding potential. Maybe our tank is overflowing its dam! Our low water crossing should be impassable right now. We’ll check both out once the sun comes up!

What’s your most favorite thing to do when it’s raining? Sleep? Read? Sew? What?
